Letter, 1934 April 21, Fredericksburg, Va., to Mr. Lester J. Cappon, Library University of Va., giving a sketch of her father, Rufus B. Merchant, founder of the "Virginia Star", Fredericksburg, Va., 1869. A section of the left margin (ca. 4.5 x 4 cm.) is torn away; no text is damaged. A note (laid in) by John Cook Wyllie states: "chewed by Dr. Cappon's dog before arrival here."

Lester Jesse Cappon (1900-1981) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Jesse Cappon and Mary E. Geisinger Cappon. He studied music, earning a diploma from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in 1920, but was also interested in history and earned degrees at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and at Harvard University, acquiring a Ph.D. in 1928.
